Website and digital communications design project for Christina McKelvie MSP

This graphic design project was created for Christina McKelvie MSP, supporting communications and design work delivered while working in her Hamilton office.

Christine McKelvie MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse

I’d like to begin this post by saying what an honour and privilege it was to work for Christina McKelvie MSP, even for a short time. Christina was a truly remarkable woman — kind, compassionate and deeply committed to her community. When I joined her team as a part-time Communications Officer, she was undergoing cancer treatment, yet she remained incredibly engaged and active in her role.

Despite the immense challenges she faced, Christina continued to provide thoughtful feedback and direction on how she wanted her message to be communicated. Her strength, dedication, and leadership were inspiring, and I feel incredibly lucky to have worked alongside her.

Website and Digital Communications

One of my first tasks was to modernise her very outdated Joomla website, which had become difficult to manage. I migrated the site to WordPress, transferring existing posts to maintain continuity and ensure constituents still had access to valuable information. I added a contact form for easier communication with the office, kept the surgery details updated, and integrated Google Analytics to track engagement with the site’s content.

After the website was launched, I focused on improving brand consistency and refining the approach to social media. By developing a more cohesive visual identity and scheduling posts during peak times, we were able to significantly increase organic reach and engagement.

Branding and Print Design

I also designed new banner stands using non-party political colours and messaging, in line with the Scottish Parliament’s guidance — always with accessibility and professionalism in mind.

One of the greatest gifts from my time in the office was the friendships I formed with my colleagues. Christina brought together a team of compassionate, supportive, and passionate people — and I’m grateful to call them friends.

A Lasting Legacy

On 27th March, we received the devastating news that our dear friend and colleague Christina had passed away. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and tireless public service. I will always be proud to have played a small part in her work.

SOCIAL

Working as part of a small, supportive team, I led on content creation for Christina’s social media. This included designing graphics and videos, writing accessible posts, and scheduling content during peak engagement times using Buffer. I helped refine the overall social media strategy to ensure brand consistency and improve organic reach. Accessibility was a key focus, with alt text used consistently and inclusive messaging throughout.
